ABOUT

The La Voz Newspaper Network is a chain of bilingual publications now operating in Texas under the auspices of the Mexican American Center for Community and Economic Development. Alfredo Rodriguez Santos c/s is the editor and is based in Austin, Texas. With five publications currently in operation, we are always looking for partners in other counties to start a newspaper under the La Voz brand.

HISTORY

The first newspaper in this network was La Voz de Brazoria County. It was started by Molly Santos in 1990, in Angleton, Texas. The second publication,  La Voz de Uvalde County, was started in October, of 1994 in Uvalde, Texas by Alfredo R. Santos c/s . (It was sold in 2002 to Juan O. Sanchez, who was the Associate Editor at the time.)  La Voz de Zavala County was started in 2000 in Crystal City, Texas but ran for only a short time.

La  Voz de Dove Springs-78744 in Austin, Texas began publication in September of 2005. In 2006, La Voz de Montopolis-78741 and La Voz de East Austin-78702 made their debut in April. In September of 2006, two more editions were added: La Voz de Riverside/Oltorf-78741 and La Voz de South Austin-78704

In March of 2007, it was decided that some changes needed to be made and instead of publishing 5 separate editions of La Voz, it would be better to just do one newspaper and call it La Voz de Austin. The focus of the newspaper will continue to be in the same zip codes. In June of 2008, La Voz de Hays County was added to the network. In May, 2011, La Voz de Guadalupe County became the four publication in the network. In September, 2011, La Voz de Comal County. In April, 2013, we added La Voz de San Antonio to our portfolio of publications.

Each issue of La  Voz will carries timely stories, community calendars, interviews, readership contests, guest columnists, bilingual quizzes and photos of community events. The newspapers appears during the first week of every month and can be found in high traffic areas such as libraries, panaderias, educational institutions, taquerias, governmental offices and restaurants. La  Voz is also delivered to local schools in the zip codes which it targets.

With a focus on education, employment and entrepreneurship, La Voz Newspapers are part of an ambitious community economic development effort that seeks to identify strengths and assets in the community and then leverage them  into creative economic opportunities.
